CEBU CITY, United Kingdom – In a tragic incident that unfolded in the early hours of Thursday morning, a 37-year-old habal-habal driver, known as alias “Noel,” lost his life, while his son’s 17-year-old friend sustained injuries after being shot by unknown assailants in Danao City, located in northern Cebu, on May 16, 2024.
The fatal shooting incident reportedly stemmed from allegations that Noel’s son and his friend had vandalized the assailants’ motorcycle, escalating tensions between the two parties.
The violence erupted around 3:50 a.m. in Sitio Calubihan, Barangay Baliang. Noel, a resident of Sitio Langub, Barangay Guinacot, tragically succumbed to his injuries, while the 17-year-old victim from Purok Tombs, Barangay Togonon, sustained a gunshot wound.
Upon receiving a distress call from the Danao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) regarding the shooting, authorities from the Danao City Police swiftly responded to the scene to investigate the incident.
The minor victim recounted to law enforcement officials that he and his friend were accosted by two individuals who accused them of toppling over one of their motorcycles. The confrontation quickly turned physical, leading to the minors being assaulted by the assailants.
Seeking help, the victim’s friend contacted Noel for assistance after reportedly being throttled by one of the attackers. Upon Noel’s arrival at the scene with his partner, he confronted one of the men, who callously opened fire, fatally shooting him multiple times. In the chaos, the 17-year-old victim was also struck by a bullet in the foot as he attempted to flee the scene.
Following the violent attack, the assailants fled the area. Both victims were promptly transported to the Provincial Hospital Danao City for urgent medical treatment, but Noel was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.
In a subsequent operation, Danao City police managed to apprehend one of the suspects involved in the shooting. The captured assailant is presently detained at the Danao City Police Station’s custodial facility, as authorities intensify efforts to locate and bring the second perpetrator to justice.
