An Elizabeth City man, Thomas Stokley Jr., aged 31, has been sentenced to a term of six years, 11 months to nine years and four months for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Additionally, he will serve between five years, seven months and seven years, nine months for possession of a firearm by a felon and habitual felon. Stokley will be in the custody of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections for the duration of his sentences.

The incident dates back to December 27, 2019, when Stokley shot another man in the vicinity of Corsair Circle and Liberator Street in Elizabeth City. Police were alerted to the shooting and responded promptly to the scene. The victim, Lazino Shelton, aged 20 and a resident of Elizabeth City, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was initially taken to Sentara Albemarle Hospital. He was later transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for further treatment of his injuries.
