SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A former resident of Noel, Missouri, Mahamud Tooxoow Mahamed, is facing new charges related to the kidnapping and murder of Jessica McCormack, whose body was found in a suitcase alongside a highway in July 2019.

New Charges

Mahamed, a Somali national and permanent resident alien in the United States, has been charged with kidnapping resulting in death, stalking resulting in death, and kidnapping a minor. These charges were included in a superseding indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Springfield.

Details of the Case

The superseding indictment alleges that Mahamed kidnapped Jessica McCormack, resulting in her death in July 2019. It also states that Mahamed stalked McCormack from April to July 2019, leading to her untimely demise. Additionally, Mahamed is accused of kidnapping a minor victim, identified as Jane Doe 1, and transporting her from Missouri to Iowa.

Arrest and Investigation

After being indicted in 2019, Mahamed evaded authorities for almost a year until his arrest in Guatemala in July 2021. He has been in federal custody since then. The investigation into McCormack’s murder involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, McDonald County Sheriff’s Department, Noel Marshal’s Office, Rochester Police Department, and Des Moines Police Department.

Discovery of McCormack’s Body

McCormack’s body was discovered near Missouri Highway 59 between Lanagan and Noel on July 29, 2019. The last known sighting of McCormack was on July 16, 2019, at her residence, where Mahamed, identified as her partner, was also present with her three daughters.

Recovery of McCormack’s Children

Following McCormack’s tragic death, her three daughters were reported missing. An Amber Alert was issued, and the children were eventually located in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 8, 2019. They were taken into state custody after a woman who knew Mahamed informed authorities that he had left the children at her residence and could not care for them.

Legal Proceedings

It is important to note that the charges against Mahamed are accusations and not evidence of guilt. The case will be presented to a federal trial jury, which will determine his guilt or innocence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ami Harshad Miller is prosecuting the case.
