Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Lorain County Prosecutor, J.D. Tomlinson, has released the evaluation of the use of force by Lorain County SWAT team members in the tragic death of Brian Dawson on January 13. The incident occurred at Sheldon Woods Reservation in Lorain County, Ohio.

According to the report, there was no finding of excessive use of force by the SWAT team during the hours-long standoff with Dawson. The 59-year-old Dawson had pointed a gun at a park ranger, identified as Matthew Pettry, when he approached Dawson to inform him that the park was closing. Pettry then retreated and called for backup.

The standoff lasted until the early hours of the next morning and escalated when Dawson fired his gun at SWAT officers. In response, the officers returned fire, resulting in Dawson’s death.

Tomlinson’s report stated that Dawson was actively resisting any commands or requests made by the officers, including surrendering to arrest. The prosecutor emphasised that in situations where an officer is faced with the threat of death or serious bodily harm from a suspect’s use of deadly force, the officer is justified in defending themselves with deadly force.

The evaluation of the SWAT team’s use of force in this case highlights the complex and challenging nature of law enforcement situations, particularly when faced with individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

As the community reflects on this tragic incident, it serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect the public. The release of the evaluation provides transparency and accountability in the investigation of this case.
