Accident – Death – Obituary News : VALDOSTA – A 17-year-old Valdosta resident was apprehended by law enforcement after stealing a vehicle on Toombs Street and attempting to flee from a VPD deputy.

The incident took place on May 13, 2024, at around 2:15 am, when Valdosta Police Officers received a call from a concerned citizen reporting the theft of her vehicle. The citizen had left her vehicle running while she quickly ran into a store located on North Troup Street. It was during this brief absence that the suspect, identified as Jayleen Scott, 17 years old and of African American descent, took advantage of the opportunity to hop into the driver’s seat and speed away in the stolen vehicle. As Scott tried to make his escape, he collided with several vehicles and mailboxes along the way.

The victim followed the stolen vehicle until it reached the 1000 block of North Toombs Street, where a deputy from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull the vehicle over. Scott, however, decided to make a run for it on foot.

In response to the situation, a K9 Unit from the Valdosta Police Department was deployed to assist in tracking down the fleeing suspect. The K9 unit diligently followed Scott’s trail for several blocks until it eventually alerted officers to his whereabouts – underneath a residence. After giving multiple verbal commands, Scott emerged from his hiding spot and was taken into custody without any further incident.

Subsequently, Scott was transported to the Lowndes County Jail and faces multiple charges, including Theft by Taking of a motor vehicle (a felony), Hit and Run (a misdemeanor), Disregard of Traffic Control Device (a misdemeanor), and Driving without a License.

Chief Leslie Manahan commended the collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies in swiftly resolving the situation, stating, “This is another example of the great teamwork between law enforcement agencies in our area. Through teamwork and a K9 with a strong dedication and drive, this offender was taken into custody quickly.”
