EVANSTON, Ill. – A homeless man and convicted felon is facing charges after Evanston police discovered him in possession of a handgun and heroin.

Authorities reported that on the evening of May 5th, Evanston police received a call about an armed individual at a CVS Pharmacy on Asbury Avenue. Concerns were raised that the individual may be planning to rob the store.

Upon reaching the scene, officers identified the individual as 39-year-old John Hernandez. After conducting a pat-down search, police found what appeared to be a handgun in Hernandez’s possession. Hernandez confessed to officers that he had a gun in his left pants pocket, leading to the discovery of a loaded Ruger Security 9mm.

However, after reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with a CVS employee, police found no evidence to suggest that Hernandez had attempted a robbery.

Subsequent to the incident, a search at the police station uncovered a small quantity of suspected heroin in Hernandez’s possession.

Further investigation revealed that Hernandez did not possess a FOID card or Concealed Carry License, and he was identified as a convicted felon. As a result, he is now facing charges including Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and two misdemeanor counts of FOID Card Violations.

Hernandez is currently being held in custody at the Cook County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on May 29th in Skokie.
