GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The tragic incident involving the death of 17-year-old Riley Doggett, who was struck by a patrol car while running from the police, has raised questions about the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision. Kent County sheriff’s reports indicate that detectives were closely monitoring the group Doggett was associated with in the days leading up to the incident.

The unfortunate event occurred on April 8 when Doggett was involved in a chase in a stolen Range Rover. The reports obtained by Doggett’s family’s attorney reveal that the Range Rover had been linked to a series of criminal activities, including larcenies, stolen vehicles, and possession of firearms in Kent and Ottawa counties.

According to the reports, Kent County detectives executed a search warrant on April 5, just three days before the chase, and recovered stolen items such as gift cards, key fobs, AirPods, and two handguns. The suspects inside the vehicle were known to be armed, adding a dangerous dimension to the situation.

The sequence of events leading to the fatal collision began when a Kent County deputy spotted the stolen Range Rover at US-131 and 44th Street in Wyoming. This sighting occurred shortly after the vehicle had been involved in a high-speed chase with Holland police, reaching speeds of 120 mph before being terminated near the Kent-Ottawa line.

The subsequent chase in Kent County reached speeds of 80 mph and ended with Doggett and another suspect fleeing from the crashed Range Rover. Doggett, described as a passenger in the vehicle, was tragically struck by the deputy’s cruiser while attempting to escape.

Despite claims from a witness that the second suspect was armed, no weapon was found at the scene. Doggett’s family’s attorney has raised concerns about the use of force in the incident, highlighting the need for transparency in the investigation.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office has defended the deputy’s actions, stating that Doggett’s death was an unintended consequence of the criminal activities he was involved in. The 17-year-old accomplice of Doggett is facing charges related to fleeing from the police, possession of the stolen vehicle, and resisting arrest.

The Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the incident, with the case expected to be handed over to the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office for further review. The prosecutor has not yet received the state police reports.
