Hopewell man returns to prison for drug distribution involving cocaine and fentanyl.

A man from Hopewell, Virginia has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for the possession and intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl, following an incident in August 2022.

Police encounter

Court documents reveal that on Aug. 22, 2022, Hopewell police officers encountered an Audi car stopped in the roadway at a local trailer park. The driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Riezon Mekhi Murphy, turned off the car’s headlights and reversed down the road into a grassy area upon seeing the authorities.

Two passengers in the front seat of the car complied with instructions to raise their hands, while an officer approached Murphy and spotted an open bottle of tequila and scattered money inside the vehicle. A search of the Audi led to the discovery of a loaded 9mm gun under the seat and a gray backpack in the passenger area, which belonged to Murphy.

Drug seizure

Upon inspection of the backpack, investigators found $1,000 in cash along with several individual baggies containing approximately 45 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl, 4.7 grams of fentanyl, 26 grams of cocaine, 96 grams of methamphetamine, and 220 grams of marijuana.

Prior convictions

The Office of the Attorney General revealed that Murphy had a history of previous convictions related to drug distribution and firearm possession. He had been convicted of distributing marijuana and possessing a .380 caliber gun, followed by convictions for possession of marijuana and a concealed firearm. Subsequent arrests led to convictions for selling Schedule I or II controlled substances and driving with a suspended license.

As a result of his latest conviction, Murphy has been sentenced to serve time in prison, highlighting the serious consequences of drug-related offences in the Hopewell area.
