Family members and loved ones are in mourning following the devastating loss of a 17-year-old boy who was tragically hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver in Long Beach over the weekend.
The victim, Brandon Cabrera, was riding a scooter near Orange Avenue and South Street in the early hours of Sunday morning when he was struck by a Cadillac SUV driven by the suspect, Karen Mativa, 35, of Compton.
Witnesses, including the victim’s friend Aniyah Diaz, recounted the harrowing moment when they saw the vehicle speeding towards Brandon. Diaz expressed her disbelief and sorrow, stating, “He did not deserve to die like this at all… There goes his whole life, gone.”
After the collision, the driver crashed into an apartment building before fleeing the scene. However, she was later apprehended by authorities and now faces charges of hit-and-run and driving under the influence.
Brandon, originally from Honduras, had moved to Southern California a few years ago to escape a difficult upbringing. Despite the challenges he faced, he was described as a caring young man who was dedicated to his studies and worked in construction to support his family.
His cousin, Britney Chacon, expressed the family’s devastation over the loss, stating, “We lost a family member because of her. It’s not OK. She needs to pay for this. She needs to pay the consequences.”
As the community comes together to mourn the tragic loss, a makeshift memorial has been set up at the scene of the crash. Family members are seeking donations to help cover funeral expenses through Cash App ($BritneyyOffical) or Zelle (562-388-2663).
