Accident – Death – Obituary News :

EUCLID, Ohio (AP) — Tragedy struck in the Cleveland suburb of Euclid over the weekend as a police officer was shot and killed in what authorities are calling an “ambush” attack. The incident occurred late Saturday night when officers were dispatched to a home following reports of a disturbance.

According to Euclid police, the officer was ambushed by a gunman while investigating the situation, resulting in the officer being struck by gunfire. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the officer tragically succumbed to their injuries.

The suspected shooter, identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was later found deceased at an address in Shaker Heights following a standoff with law enforcement. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect was heavily armed, although the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has identified the fallen officer as 23-year-old Jacob Derbin, who was in his first year of service with the department. Yost expressed his outrage at the senseless killing, particularly noting the timing of the incident on Mother’s Day and during Police Memorial Week.

In a statement, Yost said, “It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day, and that this murder happened just as we prepare to solemnize our fallen during Police Memorial Week. My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.”

Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer described the fallen officer as “an amazing human being” with a “great heart” and “incredible smile.” Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail also expressed deep sorrow and disbelief over the tragic loss, calling on the community to come together in support and solidarity.

Community Mourns Loss of Heroic Officer

The Euclid police department issued a statement early Sunday, requesting that the public keep the fallen officer, his family, loved ones, and the agency in their thoughts and prayers. Chief Meyer further emphasised the positive impact the officer had on those around him, stating, “The world’s a better place with him in it.”

Mayor Gail echoed these sentiments, urging the community to honour the fallen officer’s selfless service and to offer strength to one another during this time of grief.
