In a tragic incident over the weekend, an Ohio police officer was shot and killed in what authorities described as an “ambush” while responding to a disturbance call in Euclid, a suburb of Cleveland.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on Saturday when officers were dispatched to a home following a reported disturbance. During the investigation, a gunman ambushed one of the officers, firing shots and fatally injuring him. The officer was rushed to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The suspected shooter, identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was also found dead following a standoff at an address in Shaker Heights on Sunday afternoon. Authorities reported that Vaughn was heavily armed at the time of the incident, but it remains unclear how he died.
Ohio’s Attorney General, Dave Yost, identified the fallen officer as 23-year-old Jacob Derbin, who was in his first year of service with the department. Yost expressed his sorrow at the tragic loss, particularly highlighting the timing of the incident on Mother’s Day and during Police Memorial Week.
Chief Scott Meyer of the Euclid Police Department described Officer Derbin as an “amazing human being” with a great heart and an infectious smile. Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail also issued a statement, expressing profound sadness and calling on the community to come together in support and solidarity.

The Euclid Police Department issued a statement early Sunday, requesting that the public keep Officer Derbin, his family, loved ones, and the entire agency in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
“He was an amazing human being. Just a great heart. Had an incredible smile. The world’s a better place with him in it,” Chief Meyer said of Officer Derbin.
Mayor Gail echoed these sentiments, urging the community to honour the fallen hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others. She emphasised the importance of coming together to offer strength and support to one another as they mourn the loss of Officer Derbin.
