A tragic incident unfolded in Long Beach, California, in the early hours of the morning when a 17-year-old boy on a scooter was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver who fled the scene before being apprehended by authorities. The incident occurred at the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Street, prompting a swift response from the Long Beach Police Department.

According to reports, a 2012 Cadillac travelling northbound on Orange Avenue collided with the teenager riding the scooter just north of South Street. The impact of the collision was severe, causing the boy to sustain critical injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Suspect Apprehended

The driver of the Cadillac, later identified as 35-year-old Karen Mativa from Compton, initially fled the scene on foot following the collision. However, she returned to the scene a short while later and was taken into custody by law enforcement officers. Mativa now faces a series of serious charges, including driving under the influence, hit and run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and assault with a deadly weapon with force. Her bail has been set at $130,000.
