An Ohio police officer investigating a disturbance call at a home in Euclid, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on Saturday night in what authorities are describing as an “ambush” by a gunman who is still at large as of Sunday.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous. Authorities are urging anyone who spots him to contact the police immediately.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. local time in a residential area of Euclid, which is located approximately 15 miles northeast of Cleveland. Captain Mitchell Houser, a spokesperson for the Euclid Police Department, provided details of the shooting in a statement.
Officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence, where the gunman ambushed the officer, striking him with gunfire, according to Houser.
The wounded officer was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officer’s identity has not been released by the police at this time.
The slain officer has been identified as Jacob Derbin, according to Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.
“The promise to protect is signed with the blood of our officers. The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice,” Yost said in a statement on Sunday.
A massive manhunt is currently underway for Vaughn, involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Vaughn may be driving a white 2017 Volkswagen Passat with a temporary license plate in the rear window.
The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.
Notably, this shooting comes shortly after three Atlanta police officers were shot while responding to a call on the same evening. The officers were shot after being called to investigate a report of a man with a gun, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.
On a broader scale, at least 58 law enforcement officers have lost their lives in the line of duty so far this year, with 22 of those deaths attributed to gunfire, as reported by the Officer Down Memorial Page.
In 2023, a total of 136 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers died in the line of duty, marking a nearly 40% decrease from the 224 officers who perished in 2022.
