TAMPA, Fla. — A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning in Tampa’s bustling SoHo district, resulting in the fatal shooting of two men and leaving another man wounded. The altercation, which took place at approximately 3 a.m. EDT, escalated quickly in front of a popular Jimmy John’s restaurant located at 533. S. Howard Ave.
According to a news release from the Tampa Police Department, the three men involved in the dispute had a prior history and the confrontation turned violent, resulting in gunfire. Police Chief Lee Bercaw revealed that the groups knew each other and had unresolved issues, leading to the tragic outcome.
During a press conference following the incident, Bercaw expressed the need for any witnesses or individuals with video footage of the altercation to come forward and assist in the investigation. The lack of video evidence has made it challenging for authorities to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers heard gunshots and discovered three adult men with gunshot wounds. Tragically, two of the men, identified as Kenneth Washington, 28, and Kevon Christmas, 23, succumbed to their injuries. The third man remains hospitalized with injuries that are fortunately not life-threatening.
Despite the busy nature of the area at the time of the incident, no other individuals were harmed. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting as the investigation continues.
Hillsborough County State Attorney Susan Lopez addressed the media, condemning the senseless violence that occurred in a crowded public space. She highlighted the presence of both civilians and law enforcement officers at the scene, emphasizing the need for cooperation in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
In a statement released by the Tampa Police Department, Chief Bercaw expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and commended the efforts of the investigative team in pursuing leads and gathering evidence.
