Accident – Death – Obituary News :
A 30-year-old man, Carlos Michael Ortega, has been charged with felony rape in Idaho Falls after allegedly traveling from Colorado to meet a 17-year-old girl for a sexual encounter.
The charges against Ortega specifically relate to the victim being 16 or 17 years old, with the perpetrator being at least three years older than the victim.
The case came to light when a report was filed with the Idaho Falls police by authorities in Jefferson County, detailing that a 17-year-old girl had been taken from her home to Idaho Falls by Ortega.
According to court documents, Ortega engaged in sexual activity with the victim during their time in Idaho Falls.
Following the report, a forensic interview was scheduled for the victim, during which she revealed that Ortega had picked her up from her residence and transported her to The Hampton Inn in Idaho Falls on January 6.
It was at the hotel that the victim alleges the sexual encounter took place between her and Ortega.
Upon investigation, Ortega confirmed to police that he had indeed travelled from Colorado to Idaho Falls and had picked up the victim. He claimed that he believed their relationship to be romantic.
Initially, Ortega stated that the victim was 18 years old, but later admitted that she was 17. He also reportedly stopped at a gas station to purchase condoms before taking the victim to the hotel.
Ortega was found to be incarcerated in the Pueblo County Jail in Colorado during the course of the Idaho investigation, though the reason for his incarceration in Colorado remains unclear.
A warrant for Ortega’s arrest was issued by Bonneville County on April 1, and was executed on May 8. He is currently being held at the Bonneville County Jail on a bond of $30,000, with a no-contact order in place for the victim.
Ortega is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on May 21, and if convicted, he could potentially face a life sentence in prison. It is important to note that being charged with a crime does not imply guilt, and every individual is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
