DHARMAPURI: A 24-year-old hairdresser and his father have been booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after allegedly refusing to give a haircut to a 17-year-old Dalit boy near Harur.
According to police sources, the incident occurred when the 17-year-old from Kelaparai village, accompanied by a friend, visited the salon for a haircut on Thursday evening. The hairdresser, identified as C Yogeshwaran (24), reportedly turned him away. The boy then returned to his village and informed some youths about the incident. They went back to the salon and questioned Yogeshwaran about the denial.
Yogeshwaran’s father, Chinnaiyan (62), was also present at the time. He defended the decision, stating that it was a long-standing custom to refuse haircuts to Adi Dravidar people. This refusal led to a confrontation between the youths and the father-son duo, resulting in the filing of a complaint under the SC/ST Act.
Legal Action Taken
Following the incident, the police registered a case against Yogeshwaran and Chinnaiyan under the provisions of the SC/ST Act, which aims to prevent atrocities against marginalized communities. The duo will now face legal proceedings for their discriminatory actions.
