HAMPSHIRE TOWNSHIP, Ill. – A Pingree Grove man has been charged after police discovered the remains of a missing Crystal Lake man in Kane County.

James Cromwell, 57, from Crystal Lake was reported missing on April 4, prompting a thorough investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department. The initial findings suggested that Cromwell’s disappearance may have involved criminal activities.

Following the investigation, two search warrants were obtained by the Crystal Lake Police Department for locations in Kane County. Law enforcement officers executed one of the warrants at a property in the 45W200 block of Illinois Route 72 on May 7.

Simultaneously, the second warrant was served at the residence of 60-year-old Douglas Ottsen, located in the 600 block of N. Falls Cir. in Pingree Grove.

During the search at the property on Route 72, human remains were discovered and later identified as James Cromwell. An autopsy conducted by the Kane County Coroner’s Office determined that Cromwell had succumbed to a gunshot wound.

Douglas Ottsen has been charged with a series of serious offences, including:

  • First-Degree Murder, Class M Felony (3 counts)
  • Aggravated Kidnapping, Class X Felony (2 counts)
  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Class 2 Felony (2 counts)
  • Unlawful Possession of Ammunition by a Felon, Class 2 Felony (2 counts)
  • Aggravated Unlawful Restraint, Class 3 Felony (1 count)
  • Concealment of Homicidal Death, Class 3 Felony (1 count)

Following his arrest, Ottsen is currently being held at the Kane County Jail pending further legal proceedings.
