A tragic incident unfolded in Euclid, Ohio on Saturday night as a police officer was fatally shot in what authorities are describing as an “ambush.” The suspect remains at large as the search for him continued into Sunday.
The officer, who has not been publicly identified, was responding to a call of a disturbance at a residence on the 300 block of East 211th Street in Euclid around 9:56 p.m. EDT. According to WEWS-TV, the officer was shot by the suspect while investigating the scene.
Local news outlet WOIO-TV reported that the suspect ambushed the officer, leading to the fatal shooting. The wounded officer was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Euclid police spokesperson Capt. Mitch Houser identified the suspect as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, as reported by WJW-TV. Houser warned that Vaughn is considered “armed and extremely dangerous.”
Authorities believe that Vaughn may be driving a white 2017 Volkswagen Passat with a temporary license plate displayed in the rear window. The public is urged to report any sightings of the suspect or the vehicle to law enforcement immediately.
In a statement released early Sunday, Capt. Houser requested support for the fallen officer’s family and the Euclid Police Department during this difficult time. He assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
