Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Fruitland resident, Rydell Happy, aged 30, is facing federal charges of second-degree murder in connection with a shooting incident that took place on April 24 in western New Mexico. The victim, identified as “John Doe” in court documents, was shot and killed during the incident.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. on April 24 on U.S. 491, approximately 40 miles north of Gallup. Navajo Nation police responded to a shooting and found a family in a vehicle that had been riddled with bullet holes.

Details of the Incident

The driver of the vehicle informed the police that they had pulled over on U.S. 491 to stretch their legs while returning from Utah. Subsequently, an SUV began following them and eventually rear-ended their vehicle before opening fire on the family.

The driver’s adult child witnessed a passenger from the SUV leaning out of the window and firing shots at their vehicle. Law enforcement officers pursued the SUV, which eventually crashed. Happy, along with two others referred to as “Witness 1” and “Witness 2,” were apprehended by the authorities.

Witness 1 revealed to the authorities that Happy had instructed them to purchase a .22 caliber revolver from a pawn shop in Gallup. Throughout the day, the group engaged in criminal activities under Happy’s direction.

Sequence of Events

Prior to the fatal shooting, the group had picked up a man and demanded money from him before forcing him out of the vehicle. Witness 1 stated that Happy handed them the revolver and instructed them to shoot the man in the leg, which they did.

Later on, an altercation ensued between “John Doe” and Happy, leading to Doe begging for his life as Happy laughed. Witness 1 recounted that Happy eventually shot Doe after multiple attempts, followed by striking his head with a baseball bat and disposing of the body over a cliff.

Despite efforts by law enforcement to locate the murder weapon, the revolver has yet to be recovered. Witness 2 claimed that a hitchhiker they had picked up was responsible for the shootings, while Happy alleged that he had passed out from drinking and was unaware of the events.

Legal Proceedings

Happy has been charged with second-degree murder and is currently in federal custody following his initial booking at the San Juan County jail. Aric Elsenheimer, Happy’s legal representative, has declined to comment on the case at this time.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and gather evidence to build a strong case against the accused. The community remains shocked by the senseless violence that occurred during the April shooting spree in western New Mexico.
