SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A taxi driver from Sanford is facing serious drug charges after authorities discovered cocaine in his work vehicle, according to a statement released by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.

On Wednesday, deputies were patrolling Third Street near Alcott Street in Sanford when they noticed a white minivan bearing the logo of the taxi company Friendly Rides. The driver of the minivan, later identified as 59-year-old William Lee Roddey, caught their attention as he attempted to evade the authorities by tossing an object out of the window before coming to a halt.

Upon retrieving the discarded item, law enforcement officials confirmed that it was crack cocaine, leading to Roddey’s immediate arrest. The incident sheds light on the illicit activities that sometimes go unnoticed within the community.

Following his arrest, Roddey is now facing multiple drug-related charges, including possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. After being taken into custody, Roddey was transported to the Lee County Jail, where he remains held on a $20,000 bond.
