PALMETTO, Fla. (WWSB) – The man accused of shooting a pregnant woman during a road rage incident in Manatee County has had his case postponed, according to new court documents.
Vincent Steele, a 50-year-old man, is facing five counts of attempted murder after allegedly opening fire on a vehicle during a road rage altercation in Palmetto. The incident, which left a pregnant woman injured, took place on Business U.S. 41 where it merges with U.S. 41.
The confrontation unfolded when the occupants of a pick-up truck were heading north on the road. Steele, driving a BMW sedan, tried to overtake the truck in the merge lane. However, the vehicles made contact, causing Steele to lose control and veer off into the grassy shoulder on the 6900 block of US 41.
After the collision, Steele exited his vehicle and approached the truck, firing seven rounds at the passengers. The pregnant woman, aged 36 and carrying twins, was struck multiple times in the lower torso. Fortunately, the unborn babies were unharmed.
The woman’s 9-year-old daughter, who was also in the vehicle, described crouching down as the shots rang out. Another witness reported seeing Steele calmly walking up to the passenger side and firing at the truck.
The driver of the pick-up truck rushed the injured woman to Manatee Memorial Hospital before she was transferred to Tampa General Hospital for surgery. Despite the ordeal, both the woman and her unborn children are expected to recover.
Steele cooperated with authorities at the scene and was subsequently taken into custody. A forensic analysis revealed that he continued shooting at the vehicle even as it drove away.
Steele’s court appearance has been rescheduled for May 24, where he will face the charges against him.
