A horrifying incident of crime has rocked Karnataka, where a 32-year-old man reportedly beheaded a 16-year-old girl after authorities intervened to stop their proposed marriage due to her being a minor.
The gruesome incident unfolded on Thursday in Surlabbi village in Kodagu district of Karnataka, as confirmed by the police on Friday.
The accused, identified as Prakash, fled the crime scene and is currently on the run.
According to police reports, the victim, Meena, had recently passed her Class 10 examination and her engagement was scheduled for Thursday.
However, the illegal ceremony was thwarted when someone alerted the Child Helpline about the impending underage marriage.
Upon receiving the complaint, a team from the Child Welfare Department intervened and advised both families that proceeding with the marriage would violate the provisions of the POCSO Act and the Child Marriage Act, given Meena’s underage status.
After discussions, both families agreed to delay the marriage until Meena reached the legal age of 18. Subsequently, the officials and the groom’s family departed from the girl’s residence.
Tragically, around 5:30 pm on Thursday, Prakash returned to Meena’s house and forcibly entered the premises. He proceeded to physically assault her parents, with her father sustaining kicks and her mother being attacked with a sharp weapon.
Subsequently, Prakash dragged Meena outside for around 100 metres, where he brutally beheaded her before fleeing the scene with the severed head, as stated in a report by PTI citing Superintendent of Police (Kodagu), Ramarajan K.
The girl’s parents were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, with her mother receiving medical care for her injuries. Fortunately, her father did not sustain any visible cut injuries, as per the police report.
“Every possible effort is underway to apprehend the accused,” affirmed the Superintendent of Police.
It was revealed by the police that the victim had three sisters and two brothers, with Meena being the youngest among them.
