A man by the name of Akinyode Rasaq has been taken into custody by the Ogun State Police Command on charges of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a 14-year-old female street vendor in the Bode Olude area of Abeokuta.
The distressing incident unfolded around 10 am on Sunday, May 5, 2024, as the teenage girl ventured out from her home to sell Moi Moi, a popular Nigerian dish.
Reports indicate that the perpetrator approached the young hawker under the guise of wanting to purchase Moi Moi from her.
According to sources, after buying N1000 worth of the food item, the suspect refused to compensate the girl, claiming he would settle the bill after finishing the meal.
Describing the events, a police source recounted, “She left her residence to vend her goods. The suspect is said to have followed her, persuading her to sell him the steamed bean cake.”
“He insisted that she wait until he had consumed the food before making payment. She remained at the location for several hours, but the man continued to withhold payment. Unaware of the passage of time, she patiently awaited his payment,” the source added.
Subsequently, at approximately 1 p.m. on the same day, the suspect allegedly forcibly led the girl to his dwelling in Bode Olude and proceeded to sexually assault her before releasing her.
Further testimony from a female resident named Nurat, who resides in the vicinity, supported the young hawker’s version of events when police officers visited the scene.
Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident and revealed that the suspect had been apprehended and taken into custody.
“The minor was conducting her vending activities when the suspect approached her, feigning interest in purchasing her wares, unbeknownst to the girl of his sinister intentions. He forcefully took her into his residence and violated her. Our officers at the Bode Olude Police Division carried out an investigation at the scene,” Odutola stated.
“A medical examination conducted on the young girl indicated signs of forced penetration. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action,” she added.
