Authorities have apprehended four individuals accused of opening fire on a group in Barangay Yati, Liloan town, northern Cebu, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Alyza Wagas and injuries to her two male companions. The incident occurred at around 4:10 a.m. on May 9, 2024.

Arrests Made

Police Major Eric Gingoyon, chief of the Liloan Police Station, reported that the first suspect, identified as Nilo, 18, was taken into custody in Barangay Looc, Danao City, Cebu, at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. Nilo subsequently identified his four accomplices during questioning at the police station.

The 34-year-old twins were arrested in Purok Malipayon, Immaculada, Barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City at 2 a.m. on Friday. A 9mm pistol with six live rounds was recovered from their possession. The fourth suspect, Mak-Mak, 21, was apprehended at around 4:30 a.m. in Barangay Calero, Liloan.

Authorities are currently pursuing the fifth suspect, known only as Ugoy. According to Mak-Mak, he joined the Bloods gang in June of the previous year and claimed to have been the driver during the shooting incident, with Ugoy as the shooter.

Motives and Background

Gingoyon revealed that the suspects are all members of the Bloods gang, which is the rival of the Crips gang to which the victims belonged. The shooting was believed to be driven by personal animosities and tensions between the two groups.

On May 4, the groups clashed in Barangay Yati, where a member of the Bloods was allegedly stabbed by Alyza’s 15-year-old boyfriend. In retaliation, the Bloods targeted Alyza and her companions, but the boyfriend managed to escape unharmed.

Five individuals on two motorcycles arrived at the scene and opened fire, resulting in Alyza’s fatal injuries and wounds to her companions, John Lloyd Intan and Kyle Supatan.

Family’s Reaction

Alyza’s mother, Rose Marie, expressed gratitude for the suspects’ arrest, describing her daughter as the only girl among her four children. Despite Alyza’s rebellious nature, her mother expressed love for her and regretted her untimely death.

She recounted how Alyza would defy her advice and sneak out to be with her friends, particularly her boyfriend. Even warnings from relatives to reform fell on deaf ears, with Alyza insisting that she would only be around for another month.

Rose Marie called for the perpetrators to face the full extent of the law, as the suspects await charges of murder and attempted murder at the Liloan Police Station.

The recovered firearm will undergo ballistic analysis to determine its connection to the crime scene. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
