175 trees over 50 years old identified as high-risk

The decision to implement these safety measures comes in the wake of a tragic incident on Tuesday when a huge tree toppled onto Jalan Sultan Ismail, resulting in the unfortunate fatality of a man.

According to reports, a total of 175 trees have been flagged as high-risk, with the majority being over 50 years old. Out of these, 147 trees have already been felled to mitigate potential risks.

DBKL has disclosed that their certified arborists have been diligently inspecting trees across Kuala Lumpur since 2019, particularly focusing on those aged 30 years and above or with a circumference exceeding 1.5 meters.

DBKL developing new guidelines for high-risk and aging trees

The trees identified as high-risk underwent thorough resistograph, picus tomography, and visual assessments to detect damage, leaning, and cracks.

DBKL reiterated that this initiative aligns with their tree management strategy introduced in 2019, which incorporates a 3-tiered risk assessment to safeguard public safety.

The city council is currently in the process of enhancing the existing plan and formulating fresh guidelines for handling high-risk and aged trees. The completion of these guidelines is targeted for July 2024.

Given the unpredictable weather conditions as of late, it is advisable for everyone to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly when traversing the roads.
