A 28-year-old man, identified as Jitender Gautam from Khera Khurd village in Delhi, has been apprehended for allegedly molesting a minor boy in the Delhi Metro, according to a police official.
The incident came to light when the minor boy took to social media on May 3 to report that while he was on his way home in the metro and as he reached Rajiv Chowk Metro station, a man started touching his hip inappropriately with his finger while boarding the train.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) R.G. Naik stated, “The complainant initially thought it might have been accidental, but the accused continued to molest the minor until they reached Kashmere Gate Metro station. Subsequently, a case was registered at Rajiv Chowk Metro police station, and an investigation was launched.”
As part of the investigation, CCTV footage from 15 metro stations between Rajiv Chowk and Jahangir Puri Metro stations was reviewed to identify the perpetrator. It was determined that the accused got off at Jahangir Puri Metro station. Further investigation revealed that he boarded the metro at Kaushambi Metro station.
Teams were dispatched to Jahangir Puri and Kaushambi Metro stations to track down the suspect. The CCTV footage near Kaushambi Metro station showed the accused using a service road after leaving the station.
“After extensive efforts and receiving confidential information, the accused Jitender Gautam was apprehended with the help of local shopkeepers, guards, and residents,” added Naik.
The arrest of the accused has brought some relief to the victim and his family, who can now seek justice for the traumatic experience. The Delhi Metro authorities have also increased vigilance to ensure the safety of all passengers, especially minors, during their commute.
