(FOX 5/KUSI) — The tragic death of nine-year-old Ashton Burris, who suffered major injuries after being hit by a pickup truck in El Cajon last month, has left the community in mourning. County officials confirmed that Burris passed away on April 19, several days after the collision that took place on northbound Rios Canyon Road near Kelli Lane.
According to California Highway Patrol reports, the incident occurred on the evening of April 14 when Burris was attempting to cross Rios Canyon Road. A 76-year-old man driving a 1991 GMC Sierra northbound on the road was unable to avoid the child and tragically collided with him. Despite being rushed to the hospital with major injuries, Burris succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene, and authorities have ruled out driving under the influence as a factor in the crash. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Burris’ family during this difficult time.
