Accident – Death – Obituary News : LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– The safety concerns surrounding the Evangeline Thruway were brought to the forefront once again during a recent round-table discussion. This discussion was prompted by a tragic incident that occurred on April 24, where a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle on the thruway and tragically lost his life.

The victim has been identified as 64-year-old Paul Camp from St. Martinville. According to investigators, Camp was riding his bicycle and attempted to cross the thruway near Chalmette Drive when a vehicle travelling south collided with him. The driver of the vehicle escaped unharmed in the incident.

The Lafayette Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee, a part of the Lafayette Consolidated Government, recently convened to deliberate on their 2024 Non-motorized Priority List. During the meeting, concerns about the safety of the Evangeline Thruway were raised by concerned citizens. Nureakea Ross, a resident, expressed her worries about the lack of action contributing to more fatalities on the thruway.

Ross emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to improve safety on the road, suggesting the implementation of more speed enforcement techniques such as radar speed trailer signs to remind drivers of their speed. She also stressed the need for a collaborative effort between local, state, and federal authorities to address the safety issues on the Evangeline Thruway.

Another area of concern highlighted during the meeting was Johnston Street, where cyclists are apprehensive about using the bike lanes due to safety reasons. Matthew Holland, the secretary and treasurer of the advocacy organization Bike Lafayette, pointed out that some cyclists opt to ride in turn lanes as they feel it is safer than using the narrow shoulder.

Holland emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate the city. He highlighted the vulnerability of cyclists and the need for drivers to be mindful of their presence on the road.

In conclusion, it is evident that there is a pressing need for improved safety measures on the Evangeline Thruway and other roadways in Lafayette. Collaborative efforts between different entities and continuous enforcement of safety regulations are crucial in ensuring the well-being of pedestrians and cyclists in the city. It is imperative that action is taken promptly to prevent further tragedies on our roads..
