Authorities at High Desert State Prison in Southern California are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred last week, involving two inmates from San Diego County. The incident took place on Friday, May 3, at approximately 9:31 a.m. at the prison located outside Los Angeles County.

The victim, 49-year-old inmate Scott Cook, was stabbed multiple times during the attack. Despite prompt medical attention, Cook succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead 20 minutes after the incident. Fortunately, no other inmates or staff members were harmed during the altercation.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) identified John Patch, 36, and Zachary Harris, 30, as the primary suspects in the stabbing. The two inmates were found in possession of “inmate-manufactured” weapons at the scene, which were believed to have been used in the attack. Both Patch and Harris have been transferred to restricted housing pending further investigation.

Inmate Backgrounds

John Patch was received at High Desert State Prison in December 2022 from San Diego County. He is serving a life sentence without parole for second-degree murder, along with additional charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault causing great bodily injury. Zachary Harris, on the other hand, arrived at the prison in July 2021 from San Diego County. Harris was sentenced to 24 years and eight months for second-degree attempted murder, as well as various weapons, burglary, and driving offenses.

Scott Cook, the victim of the fatal stabbing, had been incarcerated at the prison since November 2000 after being convicted of first-degree murder, carjacking, kidnapping, grand theft, and firearm-related charges in San Bernardino County. Additionally, he received a sentence of 16 years and eight months in Kern County for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an inmate-manufactured weapon.

The motives behind the attack remain unclear, and prison officials are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. Both Patch and Harris are awaiting the outcome of the investigation while being held in restricted housing. The CDCR is working diligently to ensure the safety and security of all inmates and staff at High Desert State Prison.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing inquiries. Updates on the case will be provided as new details emerge.
