SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A man was arrested in Sacramento after he left his granddaughter with a stranger for hours while he got intoxicated at a bar, authorities reported.
Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at around 7:45 p.m. on Monday in the parking lot of a bar on Auburn Boulevard following a concerned citizen’s report of a potential abduction. The caller described a man, later identified as 54-year-old Jason Warren, seeking help in locating his 7-year-old granddaughter, whom he suspected had been taken for human trafficking, as per the sheriff’s office.
Deputies on the scene noted that Warren exhibited signs of severe inebriation.
Warren claimed that he had given $20 to an unfamiliar homeless woman to accompany his granddaughter to a nearby second-hand store while he entered the bar.
Law enforcement obtained footage from surveillance cameras showing the woman departing with the child.
The sheriff’s office deployed additional resources, including their helicopter, to aid in the search for the young girl. Half an hour into the operation, the woman returned to the parking lot with the child after hearing announcements broadcasted from the helicopter.
The woman revealed to authorities that Warren had paid her to transport the child to the thrift store. She also mentioned Warren’s intoxicated state and her doubts about his ability to care for the child. She took the girl to her shelter to provide sustenance, officials disclosed.
“Deputies conversed with the child, who confirmed the incident. The child displayed no distress and was given a clean bill of health by Fire Department personnel on-site for precautionary measures,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Further inquiry disclosed that the child’s aunt possessed full custody but had requested Warren to supervise his granddaughter while she attended work.
Following guidance from Child Protective Services, the child received clearance to return home with her aunt.
Meanwhile, Warren was apprehended on charges of felony child endangerment and other violations.
