A disturbing trend of violence against politicians in Germany has been highlighted by a recent attack on Berlin senator Franziska Giffey. The incident occurred while she was visiting a library in her district in the German capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Giffey, who is responsible for the economy in Berlin, was struck over the head with a bag containing hard materials by a 74-year-old male. The Berlin prosecutor’s office revealed that the attacker has a history of being charged with state security and hate crimes, and there are indications of mental illness.
Describing the attack on Instagram, Giffey recounted, “I suddenly felt a hard blow to my head and neck from behind. A man had attacked me with a bag filled with hard contents.”
Following the incident, the alleged perpetrator is set to appear before an investigating judge. Due to indications of mental illness, the Berlin public prosecutor’s office intends to seek an order to place him in a psychiatric hospital in accordance with Section 126a of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
