MUMBAI: Two street food vendors, Anand Kamble and Ahmed Sheikh, have been apprehended by the Mumbai police in connection with the demise of a 19-year-old individual who consumed ‘chicken shawarma’ purchased from their stall in Mumbai’s Trombay area on May 3.
Details of the Incident
The deceased, identified as Prathamesh Bhokse, sought medical assistance from a nearby municipal hospital the following day after experiencing stomach discomfort and vomiting.
Despite receiving medical attention, Bhokse’s health did not show any signs of improvement, prompting his admission to KEM Hospital on Sunday evening.
Legal Action Taken
Upon his admission to the hospital, authorities alerted the police, resulting in the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 273 (sale of noxious food or drink) of the Indian Penal Code.
Unfortunately, Bhokse succumbed to his condition on Monday, leading to the formal charging of Kamble and Sheikh under various IPC sections, including 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for strict adherence to hygiene standards in the preparation and serving of street food.
