A man identified as Mohammad Umar (28) has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping an 8-year-old girl in Delhi’s Mehrauli, according to police reports on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan stated, “On May 6, at 3 pm, a PCR call was received regarding the kidnapping of an 8-year-old girl at Kotla Mubarakpur police station. Staff was immediately rushed to the spot.”
Following a complaint filed by the family, an FIR has been registered under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation has been initiated.
“The family members and relatives of the girl were questioned thoroughly. The teams started working on all aspects. We got vital clues from the place of occurrence through analysis of CCTV footage as the suspect was spotted moving in the area,” the DCP mentioned.
After analyzing CCTV footage from various locations such as Bapu Park, Uday Chand Marg, Kotla Mubarakpur, Gurudwara Road, South Extension -1, Pilanji Village, and others, authorities identified the accused near the South Extension -1 bus stop.
Police also reviewed additional CCTV footage from DTC buses to track down the suspect and shared information about the kidnapped girl on ZIPNET, a police networking system used by neighbouring states.
On Tuesday, Umar was apprehended from the slum area of Andheria Mod, leading to the successful rescue of the girl.
During interrogation, Umar admitted to making small glass toys and revealed that he noticed the girl playing in Kotla before kidnapping her. The girl has since been reunited with her family and taken for a medical examination.
