A tragic single vehicle crash in North Kona on Tuesday resulted in the death of a 78-year-old male passenger from Papaikou, and left the female driver hospitalized.
The incident, which occurred on Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 190) near the 31.5-mile marker, claimed the life of Jeffrey Lawrence Gross, the 78-year-old passenger who tragically lost his life in the collision.
According to the Hawaiʻi Police Department, the crash involved a silver 2014 Kia Sorento that was traveling southbound. The vehicle crossed over the solid white fog line and drove off the right shoulder of the roadway, ultimately overturning after going down an embankment.
Following the crash, emergency responders rushed the 78-year-old male passenger to Kona Community Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:07 p.m.
The female driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old from Papaikou, was also taken to Kona Community Hospital for medical attention. She remains hospitalized at this time.

This tragic incident marks the 17th traffic fatality of the year, a stark increase from the 8 recorded at this time last year. The community is urged to exercise caution and vigilance on the roads to prevent further tragedies.
