CLARION CO., Pa. (EYT) – Preliminary Hearing Scheduled for Accused Scammer

An Oil City man accused of accepting money for a Facebook Marketplace sale that was never completed is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon. Court records indicate that 20-year-old Devyn James Clay Goff, of Oil City, is facing a charge of Theft by Deception — False Impression, a Misdemeanor 2 offence. The preliminary hearing is set for 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, with District Judge Timothy Schill presiding.

Details of the Alleged Scam

According to a complaint filed on Thursday, April 11, a Lucinda woman reported to PSP Clarion that she had attempted to purchase an iPhone on Facebook Marketplace on Sunday, March 3. The victim provided her address to a person identified as Devyn Goff, who claimed he would ship the phone to her. Goff requested payment through CashApp, and the victim agreed to send $160.00 to his account. However, the victim never received the phone and has had no contact from Goff since sending the money.

A search warrant on Goff’s CashApp account revealed his verified identity, including date of birth and social security number. The account also showed a $160 transaction on March 3, matching the victim’s payment.

Legal Proceedings

Devyn Goff was arraigned before Judge Schill on April 24 at 10:45 a.m. and was released on his own recognizance. The preliminary hearing on May 7 will determine further legal action in the case of the alleged Facebook Marketplace scam.
