An 18-year-old boy in Kolkata met a tragic end when he was allegedly killed by his flatmate following an altercation over sharing a water bottle. The incident occurred during a house party where the accused and other flatmates were reportedly consuming drugs.
The incident took place at the KMC Sweeper Quarters on UC Banerjee Road in the Phoolbagan area early on Monday, highlighting a simmering animosity between the accused and the victim over sleeping arrangements on the open terrace. According to the police, conflicts arose among the flatmates regarding who would occupy the open terrace during the extremely humid weather.
CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma revealed that the murder weapon, along with other sharp objects like knives and cutters, was found on the terrace, indicating premeditation. One of these weapons was used to fatally injure the victim later that night.
The accused, identified as Akash Hari, has been taken into custody by the police.
DC (Eastern Suburban) Gaurav Lal provided a detailed account of the events leading to the tragedy, stating, “Just after midnight, there was a clash between Rabidas and Hari over who would sleep on the open rooftop. Hari was incensed when he was denied the opportunity to sleep on the terrace. He was also disgruntled when he did not receive the water bottle.”
“Around 12:30 a.m., the victim was already asleep when Akash Hari returned to the rooftop, where other flatmates were still partying,” Lal continued. “Hari callously flung Rabidas’ water bottle to the ground, rousing the victim from his slumber. In the ensuing altercation, Hari fatally stabbed him with a cannabis-chopping knife. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the NRS Hospital.”
The victim, Nitish Rabidas, had relocated to his elder sister’s residence about eight months ago after securing a job in the city. The police confirmed that the victim’s body has been released to his family after undergoing a postmortem examination.
