Gunman Disrupts Church Service in North Braddock, Pennsylvania
A church service in North Braddock, Pennsylvania was thrown into chaos on Sunday when a man brandished a firearm at the pastor in the middle of his sermon.
The Pennsylvania State Police have charged 26-year-old Bernard Polite of Braddock for his actions at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church, where Pastor Glenn Germany was delivering a sermon at just after 2 p.m.
Video footage captured by the church’s deacon, and later shared online by Pastor Glenn Germany, shows the shocking moment when the pastor was faced with a gun pointed directly at him.
“I couldn’t believe it was happening,” Pastor Germany recalled.
Despite the terrifying situation, no shots were fired. “I thank God because only His intervention stopped this potential tragedy,” Germany expressed.
As Pastor Germany swiftly moved out of harm’s way, church Deacon Clarence McCallister heroically lunged at the armed man, bringing him to the ground.
Reflecting on his instantaneous response, McCallister said, “I knew I had to act quickly and do what was necessary.”
Pastor Germany commended McCallister’s bravery, describing him as a hero for his swift actions.
Working together, McCallister and Germany managed to subdue Polite until law enforcement arrived to take him into custody.
Polite now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and attempted homicide.
During his interaction with Polite while in police custody, Pastor Germany learned that the man claimed to be battling with inner demons and hearing voices that led him to the church with violent intentions.
Germany expressed concern for Polite’s mental state, stating, “It was evident that this individual is struggling with mental health issues.”
Polite reportedly apologised to Pastor Germany, who forgave him, although he admitted that he was still processing the traumatic events that unfolded.
Germany revealed that his 14-year-old daughter was present in the congregation at the time of the incident, adding to the emotional turmoil of the situation.
Prior to the attempted shooting, Pastor Germany mentioned that Polite had smiled at him, further highlighting the unpredictability of the situation.
In the aftermath of the incident, Germany is using the experience to raise awareness among his parishioners about the importance of understanding and addressing mental health issues.
Investigation into Fatal Shooting at Suspect’s Home
Following the attempted shooting at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church, Allegheny County Police are now investigating a separate incident involving a fatal shooting at the home where Bernard Polite resides.
Authorities responded to a call regarding a shooting at a residence on Stokes Avenue around 8 p.m., where they discovered the body of 56-year-old Derek Polite.
Detectives from the Allegheny County Police Department’s homicide unit have taken over the investigation into the tragic incident.
