BONSALL, Calif. — A suspect was shot and arrested by sheriff’s deputies in Bonsall on Saturday, leading to the temporary closure of State Route 76 in both directions.
The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Mission Road and Via Montellano, as reported by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
According to a department spokesperson, several deputies responded to reports of a man wielding both a Glock-style handgun and a knife in the vicinity.
Upon arrival at the scene, the first two patrol officers encountered the armed individual, identified as 66-year-old Patrick Wendell Lowell from Escondido, revealed San Diego Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Shebloski.
“Deputies issued multiple commands for Lowell to drop the weapons he was holding while awaiting additional backup,” Shebloski stated. “Despite the warnings, Lowell persisted in brandishing the weapons, leading to a deputy-involved shooting.”
Both deputies discharged their firearms, striking Lowell in the lower body, causing him to relinquish the weapons, as confirmed by the lieutenant. Fortunately, his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.
No deputies sustained injuries during the altercation, and Lowell was apprehended at a medical facility. He now faces charges of armed assault on a peace officer, in addition to an existing felony warrant.
As a result of the incident, SR-76 was temporarily shut down between Camino Del Rey and East Vista Way for investigation and clearance.
“In adherence to a countywide agreement, the San Diego Police Department has been summoned to oversee the inquiry into the deputy-involved shooting,” the Sheriff’s Department mentioned in a statement.
