(CNN) — Authorities in Mexico have confirmed that the bodies of three missing tourists, including a US citizen, were found in a well with gunshot wounds to the head. The victims have been identified as American Jack Carter Rhoad and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson.

The Baja California Attorney General’s office stated that the bodies were identified by relatives without the need for genetic testing. Three Mexican citizens who were previously questioned in connection with the disappearance have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, with one of the suspects known as Jesús Gerardo “El Kekas.”

The three friends went missing on April 29 while on a surfing and camping trip near the town of Ensenada. Authorities believe they were murdered, possibly during an attempted vehicle robbery. Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade Ramirez has assured the victims’ parents of ongoing investigation efforts.

Investigations revealed a burnt-out white pickup truck at a ranch in Santo Tomas, matching the vehicle Callum Robinson had posted on Instagram before their disappearance. Preliminary reports suggest the surfers may have been attacked during the robbery.

Heartbreaking Loss

The news of the surfers’ deaths has devastated their families and friends. Jake Robinson, a doctor, had embarked on the trip with his brother Callum and their American friend for a memorable experience. Callum, a member of Australia’s national lacrosse team, was described as having an “infectious spirit” and a “larger-than-life personality.”

Friends and colleagues remember Callum for his warmth and friendly nature. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. The tragic loss has left a void in the lives of many who were touched by his presence.

Security Concerns

While Mexico is a popular tourist destination, incidents of violent crime, including kidnapping and human trafficking, remain a concern. The country’s high homicide rate and the prevalence of drug cartels contribute to the insecurity in certain regions.

The deaths of the surfers echo a previous incident in 2015 when Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were killed in Sinaloa state. The recent murders have sparked outrage in the surf community, prompting calls for improved security measures.

Local residents and surfers have demanded justice and increased safety from the authorities. The need for secure environments for recreational activities, such as surfing and camping, is essential to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to support ongoing investigations into the case.

This is a developing news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
