ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—In a recent development, the United States Department of Justice has reported the arrest of a 35-year-old man for making threatening remarks towards students at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke via social media.
Following a joint investigation by the City of Roanoke Police Department and the FBI, Stephen Karl Johnson, a resident of Roanoke, has been taken into custody. Johnson faces federal charges for communicating threats to injure another person across state lines. Additionally, he has been charged by the RPD with Threats Towards Schools, a class 6 felony.
United States Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh expressed his satisfaction with the arrest, stating, “This defendant caused fear and emotional distress to the parents and students of the Roanoke City Public School system. For his actions, he has been rightfully charged. If anyone threatens our schools, public servants, or institutions in the Western District of Virginia, we will ensure they are held accountable under federal law. I commend Chief Booth, the Roanoke City Police Department, and the FBI for their swift resolution of this situation.”
According to reports, Johnson made threatening posts in a Snapchat group used by students of Patrick Henry High School, prompting the closure of public schools in Roanoke on Thursday.
Law enforcement officials identified Johnson as a suspect during the course of their investigation. They were able to trace the threatening messages back to a Gmail address associated with Johnson.
Although there is no recent connection between Johnson and Roanoke City Public Schools, authorities have confirmed that he was once enrolled in the school system during his juvenile years.
