Accident – Death – Obituary News :

An Ann Arbor man, Gary William Lockwood, 31, facing charges of criminal sexual conduct has been found competent to stand trial. The ruling was made after Lockwood underwent a psychiatric examination in December and appeared in court before 14-A1 District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Lockwood is accused of two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, as well as one count each of accosting children for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit a crime. Additionally, he faces charges of malicious destruction of fire or police property and two counts of resisting a police officer, all of which are felonies.

The charges stem from an incident on Sept. 19 when Ann Arbor police responded to a report of a 13-year-old girl who had run away from home in the 500 block of West Summit Street. Detective Zachary Allen stated during a hearing on Sept. 23 that the girl was found by her father in a nearby wooded area with an adult man, who fled the scene and was later identified as Lockwood.

According to Allen, the girl revealed that she had met Lockwood through her 14-year-old sister, who was allegedly in a sexual relationship with him. The 13-year-old stated that she and Lockwood had exchanged nude photographs via Facebook messenger.

A preliminary search uncovered numerous nude photographs of Lockwood that had been sent to the girl, along with messages inquiring about sexual acts. Lockwood was arrested outside the Delonis Center and had initially met the girls at a community event in the park.

Lockwood has maintained his innocence and expressed concerns about his competency during his arraignment hearing in September. Under Michigan law, individuals are presumed competent unless they are unable to understand court proceedings or assist in their own defense.

Lockwood is currently held in the Washtenaw County Jail on a $300,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, March 14.
