The events unfolded on a late Saturday night when a vigilant deputy observed a vehicle swerving erratically on Long Ferry Road. The driver’s erratic behaviour raised suspicions, prompting the deputy to initiate a traffic stop. As the vehicle came to a halt, the deputy approached the driver’s side window and instructed the driver to exit the vehicle.

Upon searching the driver, identified as 34-year-old Zebulon Shane McLaughlin, the deputy discovered two bullets and bars of Xanax in his possession. A further search of the vehicle yielded a handgun wedged between the driver’s seat and the center console, leading to McLaughlin’s arrest.

McLaughlin now faces a slew of charges, including possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, driving with a revoked license, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, driving left of center, and failure to yield for an emergency vehicle. He has been remanded to the Rowan County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.

This incident is not the first brush with the law for McLaughlin, who was previously convicted of felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance in June 2023.

In other notable incidents reported by the Salisbury Police Department, a series of crimes occurred in various locations within the city. These included larceny from motor vehicles, assault with hands, feet, or fist, theft of a motor vehicle, larceny, burglary, and hit-and-run incidents. Several individuals were also charged with offences ranging from trespassing to possession of controlled substances.

Meanwhile, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office reported instances of larceny from motor vehicles, vandalism, burglary, and charges against individuals for offences such as carrying a concealed gun, assault, and trespassing.

The discovery of the handgun during the traffic stop serves as a stark reminder of the importance of law enforcement vigilance in ensuring public safety. Such incidents underscore the need for continued efforts to prevent the misuse of firearms and controlled substances within communities.

As authorities continue to investigate and address criminal activities, it is crucial for individuals to adhere to the law and uphold community safety. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story..
