A man from Benton in Franklin County, Southern Illinois, has been arrested for allegedly committing aggravated battery to a peace officer and other charges.
Eric S. Sullivan, aged 53, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and possession of a controlled substance.
The incident unfolded on Monday, February 19 when the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a man walking in the middle of Illinois State Highway 34 near Steel City Road. The man, later identified as Sullivan, reportedly refused to move off the road despite numerous attempts to get him to do so.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies encountered Sullivan who allegedly ignored their commands and proceeded to walk towards one of the deputies. Sullivan then allegedly pushed the deputy in the chest, prompting a physical altercation.
Despite the deputy managing to subdue Sullivan and place him in handcuffs, Sullivan continued to resist arrest and even kicked at the deputies.
During a search of Sullivan, law enforcement officers discovered a plastic baggie containing a substance that tested positive for cocaine.
Following his arrest, Sullivan was transported to the Franklin County Jail where he awaits further legal proceedings.
The arrest operation involved collaboration between the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Benton Police Department, and Illinois State Police.
