BURNABY — A routine traffic stop turned into a dangerous situation on Saturday (Feb. 17) when an officer with BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby was struck by a fleeing suspect on Highway 91 southbound at 72nd Ave in Delta.

A news release from BC Highway Patrol reveals that at approximately 10:30 a.m., the officer had pulled over a vehicle associated with a man who had an outstanding B.C.-wide warrant for his arrest. The situation escalated when the driver, identified as 57-year-old Tobin Peter Haas from Vancouver, suddenly fled the scene, reportedly hitting the officer in the process.

Emergency services, including the Delta Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, officers from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, and Delta Police, promptly responded to the incident. The injured officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, the officer has since been discharged from the hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Although the vehicle driven by Haas has been located, the suspect remains at large. Haas is wanted for an outstanding warrant related to break and enter, as well as for questioning regarding the hit-and-run incident. Authorities advise the public to avoid approaching Haas and urge them to contact their local police if they spot him.
