A heartbreaking incident unfolded over the weekend as a Davenport man lost his life while attempting to cross US 27, as reported by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Law enforcement officials swiftly responded to the scene of the tragic crash, which occurred at the intersection of US 27 and I-4 near Davenport at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Following a detailed investigation, traffic homicide detectives were able to confirm the identity of the victim as 41-year-old William Sotomayor, with the assistance of PCSO’s identification section scrutinizing copies of his fingerprints.

The distressing incident involved a 35-year-old Davenport man behind the wheel of a silver 2012 Acura RDX, tragically colliding with Sotomayor as he endeavoured to cross US 27.

In the aftermath of the collision, the driver faced difficulties in halting his vehicle promptly due to inclement weather conditions and the presence of another vehicle behind him. However, he responsibly parked at a nearby gas station and cooperated with deputies during their investigation.

The closure of the northbound lanes of US 27 persisted for approximately two hours following the tragic incident, according to PCSO’s updates.

While no immediate charges are foreseen in connection with this fatal crash, Polk County deputies affirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, shedding light on the need for continued scrutiny in such cases.
