A horrific incident unfolded in Cherthala on Monday as a 36-year-old man, identified as Shyam G. Chandran, tragically killed his 30-year-old wife, Arathi, by setting her ablaze. The couple, who were residing in Vettackal near Cherthala, had been facing marital issues leading up to the fatal incident.
Details of the Incident
According to the Cherthala police, the dreadful act took place in the morning as Arathi was on her way to work at a financial firm in Cherthala. Shyam intercepted her two-wheeler near Government Taluk Hospital, Cherthala, where he proceeded to pour petrol on her before igniting the flames.
Arathi, sustained severe burns in the attack and was rushed to Government Taluk Hospital initially, before being transferred to Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Alappuzha. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries later that evening. Shyam, who also suffered burns in the incident, was admitted to the MCH for treatment.
Legal Action Taken
The authorities have registered a case in connection with the heinous crime. An official stated that the couple had been living separately due to ongoing family disputes, which ultimately led to the brutal murder of Arathi.
It was revealed that Arathi had previously filed a domestic violence case against Shyam, resulting in a court order for her protection. Recently, Shyam was arrested by the police following a complaint from Arathi concerning threats made by him. He was subsequently released on bail.
