Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A sharp-eyed Howell Township police officer’s keen observation led to the swift apprehension of a 19-year-old suspect linked to an armed robbery on February 13, according to Howell police authorities.

Further information regarding the arrest of Giancarlo Nevarez, 19, from the Clarksburg area of Millstone, was disclosed by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Nevarez faces charges of first-degree armed robbery, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, as stated by Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

On the afternoon of February 13, a report of a gunshot being fired in the vicinity of Five Guys Burgers and Fries at Candlewood Shopping Center was received by authorities. The caller informed Howell police that he and his companions had gone to the shopping plaza to finalize a transaction involving the sale of designer sneakers to an individual they had been negotiating with online.

As the exchange of sneakers for cash was about to take place, the purchaser produced a handgun, demanded the sneakers, and discharged a shot, as relayed by the victim to the police.

The suspect fled the scene with the sneakers, leaving the victims with a description of him and his vehicle—a grey delivery van similar in appearance to an Amazon delivery van, according to police reports.

Patrolman Nicholas Matteo, who happened to be in the vicinity, spotted a van matching the description on Route 9 north near Regal Plaza. He promptly called for backup for a high-risk motor vehicle stop, leading to the driver’s apprehension. The driver, identified as Nevarez, was found alone in the van, fitting the victims’ description. Subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a 9mm handgun, a shell casing, and the allegedly stolen sneakers.

Nevarez was taken into custody, charged, and later transferred to Monmouth County Jail for a detention hearing. The Howell police department praised Ptl. Matteo for his exceptional police work and commended the collaborative efforts of the officers involved in resolving the case.

The police department also emphasized the availability of a safe exchange area at the township’s police department for internet merchandise exchanges and domestic child custody exchanges. With multiple cameras in place for surveillance, residents are encouraged to exercise caution and conduct transactions in public locations.
