Accident – Death – Obituary News : A man has been handed a 35-year prison sentence after admitting to a murder charge in a fatal shooting that took place at Coconuts Wing Cantina in Socorro, El Paso County court documents have revealed. Neftali Maymi Martinez entered a guilty plea to the murder charge and two counts of aggravated assault on February 8 in the 120th District Court, in relation to the tragic bar shooting that occurred on the evening of August 25, 2021.

The sentencing was conducted by Judge Maria Salas-Mendoza on February 12, with Martinez receiving 35 years for the murder case and 10 and five-year sentences for the two counts of aggravated assault. It was noted in court records that Martinez will receive credit for the over two years (901 days) he spent in custody awaiting trial.

The incident in question involved the killing of 51-year-old Daniel Almanzar, as well as the injury of another individual who was shot in the thigh. The violent episode was captured on security cameras inside Coconuts Wing Cantina, which is situated at 10750 N. Loop Drive in the Fiesta Mercado retail strip.

Almanzar was described by his loved ones in an obituary as a caring husband, father, and grandfather to two grandsons. The altercation between Martinez and Almanzar reportedly began inside the bar, leading to Martinez being ejected from the premises following the argument.

Witnesses recounted that Martinez allegedly made threats to return with a firearm after his expulsion. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes later, Martinez re-entered the establishment and proceeded to discharge several rounds from a handgun, resulting in fatal injuries to Almanzar and the other victim being rushed to Del Sol Medical Center for treatment.

Following the shooting at Coconuts Wing Cantina, law enforcement officers responded to a separate call regarding a drive-by shooting outside a residence on Catherine Slutter Lane in Socorro. Home security footage in the area captured the driver of a silver van firing a weapon, ultimately leading to Martinez’s arrest near the vehicle in question.

Martinez, who was described by bar witnesses as a tall individual donning a green, long-sleeve shirt, was identified as the perpetrator of both the bar shooting and the subsequent drive-by incident. Despite this, a motive for the latter occurrence was not specified in the affidavit documenting the events..
