Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has made a significant breakthrough by announcing the arrests in two cold case killings that had remained unsolved for years. The first case involved the tragic death of Charity Sutherland, who was fatally shot during a domestic dispute with the father of her child on April 2nd, 2022. Sheriff Hobart Lewis revealed that the suspect, 22-year-old Charles Russell Reams, had been a person of interest in the case, but lacked the necessary evidence to make charges. However, in January, DNA evidence and eyewitness testimony finally linked Reams to the crime.
Currently, Reams is in custody in Rome, Georgia, facing unrelated charges including aggravated assault, battery, kidnapping, false imprisonment, felony theft, and possession of a firearm during a crime. In the second case, Zachary Whitley was shot in 2016 during an attempted robbery over a narcotics transaction. The investigation led to the identification of 34-year-old John Wesley Nix as one of the perpetrators, with two other suspects still at large.
Both murders took place at the same location – 220 Eastview Rd. in the town of Pelzer, according to Sheriff Lewis. He commended the cold case investigators for their hard work in utilizing DNA and forensic technology to bring closure to the families of the victims. Despite the unrelated nature of the crimes, the arrests have provided justice and resolution for the affected families.
Sheriff Lewis highlighted the commitment of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office in pursuing justice for the community, citing the successful resolution of all 29 homicides in 2022 and 16 out of 17 murders in 2023.
