Portland Traffic Crashes

Introduction

According to recent reports by the police, the number of fatalities resulting from traffic crashes in Portland has reached 12 so far this year. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the same period last year, where only six deaths were recorded. These statistics have raised concerns about road safety in the city, as Portland witnessed the highest number of traffic deaths in 2023 since 1986.

Recent Incidents

In the past three weeks, several fatal accidents have occurred on Portland roadways. The following are some of the tragic incidents:

Jan. 24, NORTH ROSA PARKS WAY

Pedro Sanchez-Machic, aged 41, lost his life in a single-vehicle crash on North Rosa Parks Way during the early morning hours of January 24. Emergency responders arrived at the scene at 4:32 a.m, where they found Sanchez-Machic deceased. Further details regarding the cause of the crash are yet to be released by the authorities.

Jan. 26, NORTHEAST LOMBARD AND BRYANT STREET

A collision involving two cars took place on January 26 at Northeast Lombard Street and Bryant Street. Charles Preisch, a 74-year-old individual who was initially expected to recover from his injuries, sadly passed away three days later. According to the police, Preisch was driving a 2014 Toyota Prius, which was stationary on Lombard Street before pulling out onto the road and being hit by another Prius.

Jan. 27, SOUTHWEST BEAVERTON-HILLSDALE HIGHWAY

A crash occurred on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway near 56th Avenue on January 27, resulting in the death of a pedestrian. The victim was identified as 60-year-old Floyd William Charlan Jr. The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene, and no further details regarding the cause of the crash have been provided by the police.

Feb. 5, SOUTHEAST 82ND AND FLAVEL STREET

Edward Hanson, a 44-year-old pedestrian, was struck and killed in Southeast Portland on February 5. The incident took place at 2:17 a.m, and Hanson was found dead at the scene. The driver responsible for the collision fled before the arrival of law enforcement. However, the police later identified 26-year-old Skyler Lee-Stiles as the driver through video evidence. Lee-Stiles has been charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence.

Feb. 10, NORTH MARINE DRIVE

Last Saturday, a tragic two-car crash occurred at the intersection of North Marine Drive and Leadbetter Road. The collision resulted in the deaths of 18-year-old Cristian Perez Hernandez and 16-year-old Gabriel Sanchez. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find one of the vehicles engulfed in flames. Unfortunately, Hernandez and Sanchez were found dead within the wreckage. Another individual, who remains unidentified, sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital. Police suspect that the crash was related to a street racing gathering.
